How to protect your dog against parasites
We all want our dogs to be happy and healthy. Unfortunately, parasites, such as fleas and ticks, can seriously affect their health and happiness. By understanding parasite threats and taking proactive steps to prevent infestations, you can help ensure your dog stays parasite-free and prepared for all your adventures together.
Common parasites by season
- Spring: In the spring, ticks are more commonly seen. They can transmit tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.
- Summer: In the warmer summer months, flea numbers increase. Fleas can infest both pets and homes, which may result in itching and skin irritation for your dog and potentially you.
- Autumn: When Autumn begins, parasites are still very active. Ticks are a concern until the first frost, while fleas remain a problem as they thrive indoors when the central heating is switched on.
- Winter: Fleas and ticks are less prevalent in the winter time, but may continue to be an issue as central heating provides the potential for an infestation, if your pet and home has been left untreated.
Protect your pet from fleas and ticks whatever the season
What can you do to protect your dog from fleas and ticks?
- Undertake regular checks: Check your dog’s coat for ticks after every walk, particularly if you’ve been in wooded or grassy areas. Pay particular attention between their toes, behind their ears, on their face and areas of their body lower to the ground. If you feel a raised bump, carefully part the fur to see if it is a tick. In addition, check for fleas regularly - part the fur and look for “flea dirt” or black specs in their coat. Hair loss, scratching and biting may also be signs or a flea or tick infestation.
- Use preventive treatments: Use an anti-parasiticide product routinely. Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On provides continuous protection – killing fleas and ticks – when used monthly. This easy to use, veterinary medicine is tough on parasites but kind on your wallet!
- Clean, clean, clean: Wash your dog’s bedding regularly (at 60°C) and vacuum floors, rugs, and furniture thoroughly. This helps to remove flea eggs and larvae from your home, which can help to break the parasite’s lifecycle.
What do you do if you detect fleas on your dog?
Act quickly to limit their spread. Use Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On flea treatment for dogs, a veterinary medicine, available without prescription containing fipronil, which kills fleas and ticks, and provides continuous protection when used monthly.
Unfortunately, if your pet has fleas only 5% of the flea problem is on your pet, the other 95% is in your home, and comprises of flea eggs, larvae and pupae. Without intervention, these life stages will develop into adult fleas and keep the cycle of infestation alive. To tackle an infestation, wash your dog’s bedding at 60°C, vacuum your home thoroughly and use a home flea treatment, such as Beaphar FLEAtec Household Spray, which contains both an insecticide and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). This household spray not only kills adult fleas but prevents the flea eggs and larvae, from developing, helping to stop a flea infestation in its tracks.
Be prepared for all adventures, whatever the season with Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On.
