Flea and Tick Prevention vs. treatment: What’s best for your dog?

When it comes to the health of a family member, including your pets, prevention is always better than treatment. Why wait for fleas, ticks, and other parasites to cause discomfort, potentially spread diseases, and become challenging to deal with once they take hold? By choosing proactive, preventative care, you can protect your dog whilst also saving time and money.

Parasite Prevention or Treatment: what’s the difference?

Preventative Care

  • Focuses on preventing infestations before they happen.
  • Uses products, like Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On, that kills fleas and ticks, and provides ongoing protection when used regularly.
  • Helps keeps your dog comfortable, healthy, and free of irritation.

Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On is a veterinary medicine available without prescription that kills fleas and ticks. When applied monthly, it provides your dog with continuous protection against fleas and ticks.

Reactive care or treatment

  • Involves treating your dog once an infestation has already been established. If your pet has fleas, the ones you see are only 5% of a flea infestation. The other 95% is in your home, and comprises of flea eggs, larvae and pupae; without intervention all these life stages will develop into adult fleas and keep the cycle of infestation going. Reactive treatment will require treating of the home as well as your pet.
  • Means your dog is already suffering with fleas, which will be irritating and uncomfortable for them. In some cases, flea problems may require veterinary intervention, which may cause your dog further distress.
  • May be costly and take considerable time to get under control, especially if fleas have infested your home. Flea infestations can take up to 3 months to resolve in the home.

Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On is a dog flea treatment which will treat an active flea problem.  It kills fleas for up to five weeks and ticks up to four weeks. Treatment can be repeated every four weeks.

Benefits of preventative flea and tick treatment

  1. Protect your dog’s health
Fleas and ticks are more than just a nuisance; they can transmit serious illnesses to your dog, such as:
    • Tapeworms (via fleas)
    • Lyme disease (via ticks)

Using preventive treatments regularly can help reduce these health risks, and avoid both your home and your pet becoming infested.

  1. Save time and money
Treating flea and tick infestations requires more effort and resources than preventative treatment, including:
    • Deep cleaning your home to eliminate flea eggs and larvae. This includes washing all pet bedding at 60°C and treating the home with a home flea product, such as Beaphar FLEAtec Household Spray which contains both an insecticide and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). This will not only kill adult fleas but prevent the flea eggs and larvae from developing, helping to stop a flea infestation in its tracks. It can take up to 3 months to remove an infestation from your home.
    • Veterinary visits may be required should parasites cause serious discomfort to your dog.

Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On provides vet strength, monthly flea and tick protection that is tough on parasites, kind on wallets.

  1. Avoid discomfort for your dog
Scratching, skin irritation, and infections are common consequences of fleas and ticks. Proactive, preventative care ensures your dog stays happy and itch-free.
