feather plucking

Feather plucking is a widespread problem with birds (not only with parrots). Birds may pluck out all their feathers. The plucking is an obsessive form of caring for the feathers. In the wild, birds preen their feathers to calm down. Stress or food deficiencies might lead to the bird feeling the need to pluck its feathers in an effort to restore its own well-being. However, the bird will not calm down until the stress-related problems (solitude, for example) or food deficiencies are resolved. Preening will become increasingly rough, and may lead to injuries and feathers falling out.
