food
Dogs are omnivores and need to eat meat. An adult dog will need two meals a day, at regular times. A dog that receives lots of treats will become picky and ignore his normal food. A healthy dog that gets plenty of exercise and the right amount of food will always be “hungry” and gobble down his food without protesting. He will always empty his food bowl. If a dog becomes picky, you are probably overfeeding him. Decrease the amount of food in his portions drastically and you will see your dog returning to proper eating behaviour after only a few days. Your dog’s meal needs to contain meat (or other sources of protein) and grain products (rice, brown bread, toast, etc). The quantities should be adjusted according to your dog’s age, weight and daily exercise pattern.
Everything your dog needs will be accounted for in the right quantities in a commercial super-premium dry or tinned food. Do not make up your own dog food; it is better to buy it at a pet shop, as all the trouble of ensuring the correct mix of ingredients has been taken care of for you. You can supplement dog’s normal food with extra minerals, vitamins and possible a calcium supplement, when needed.
Be careful with bones. Never give leftover bones from your own meal to your dog. Bone that has been heated will splinter when chewed and these splinters can damage your dog’s stomach, intestines or cause respiratory difficulties.
Drinking water
Your dog likes a fresh drink of water, so take care that fresh drinking water is readily available. To maintain his water balance levels, a healthy dog will need about 50ml of water per kilogram of bodyweight, every day.
