natural products
You will also find several natural products with insect repelling properties to help in your battle against fleas. A few examples of these are:
• Garlic; the active substance allicin which is secreted by the skin after the ingredient is absorbed will keep insects, parasites and other bugs at a distance.
• Lavender; insects and parasites dislike this plant’s scent.
• Eucalyptus oil; not only will the scent repel insects, but the active substance cineol will have a poisonous or repelling effect on certain species of insects.
• Lemon; this fruit’s scent will repel insects and other bugs.
• Ruta graveolens; the scent of the oil secreted by this plant’s leaves is pleasant to humans, but will keep insects at a distance.
• Tea Tree; a tree species mainly found in Australia. The Aboriginals have known for a long time that the aromatic oils in Tea Tree will repel mosquitoes and fleas.
• Margosa: oil obtained from the fruit of the tropical Neem tree. The active substances salanin and meliantriol produce a repulsive odour and taste for insects.
Natural products are known to have only a very limited effect against fleas and insects as a repellent. This property often only makes them useful to prevent a flea infestation rather than actually combating one.
