food
Most terrarium animals require live food, but there are also various types of herbivorous terrarium animals. Your terrarium animal needs the right food to grow properly and stay healthy. There are various types of food available, and their composition varies greatly. Beaphar offers several types of food for different terrarium animal species. By involving terrarium specialists, veterinarians and nutritionists in the development of Beaphar foods, we can be sure that our food will satisfy your animal’s every need. Some foods are not designed for your animal itself, but for the insects it eats. Your terrarium animal may also require live food.
Grassland insects
Smaller lizards and many amphibians enjoy a diet that consists of a mix of several different species of small insects. You can obtain a variety of different insects by dragging a net, with a very fine gauge, through a meadow or field.
Your lizard or amphibian will especially like the smaller insects, but there are several types of insect that your animal will despise: woodlice, wasps, bees and bumblebees.
Pay attention to what type of harvesting ground you choose. If it is close to a motorway (high concentrations of toxic heavy metals) or treated with herbicides, it is not a suitable place to go hunting for your animal’s food.
Crickets
You can buy crickets from specialised pet stores. They come in assorted sizes and you can choose between house crickets (brown) and field crickets (black).
You can also opt to breed your own crickets. Because they are adept climbers and require a warm living environment (preferably around 30°C), you will need a properly sealed, yet well ventilated terrarium with smooth walls.
You can heat the crickets’ living environment by means of a lamp or heating element. Make sure that you use a high quality light bulb or heating element: a breakdown would mean the end of your cricket population with all its consequences.
For more or other information about breeding crickets, visit your pet store.
Grasshopper
Your pet store will usually also stock grasshoppers. Depending on the quantity of grasshoppers you need, it might be profitable to breed them yourself.
Grasshoppers mainly eat different types of grass. Especially in winter, this type of food may be hard to come by.
Grasshoppers like a light, warm environment. The ideal temperature to breed them is 34°C. You can warm up their living environment by using regular light bulbs and your grasshoppers will flourish if they get the benefit of sunlight during the day.
Mealworms
Mealworms are available from all pet stores. As mealworm reproduction takes quite a while, it is an almost impossible task to start breeding them yourself. In addition, they are cheap, depending on their weight. Beaphar also offers tinned mealworms that will keep for a long time.
Plants
Several types of terrarium animals are herbivores. You can give them fresh vegetables or plants, but, when fed in this way, your animals will run the danger of ingesting pesticides or herbicides, and may suffer from nutrient deficiencies. Giving additional vitamins and minerals to your herbivore is essential: Beaphar offers several mineral and vitamin supplements for this purpose.
It is possible to give your animal complete food that contains everything it needs. These foods consist of vegetables but meet your animal’s every need because of their composition. Also, they are easier to digest than fresh plants because of the way the food is processed, preventing possible stomach and intestinal problems.
The ingredients in these foods have been specially checked for the presence of pesticides, herbicides and other toxins to prevent problems for your animal.
Different types of food are available for the different terrarium animal species. Please see the product page on this website for more information
